NOCHEBUENA HOLIDAY MARKET

Nochebuena Holiday Market is the solution to your last-minute Christmas stress this weekend. Escape the downtown shopping mall frenzy to hang out at East Van Studios (870 East Cordova), where there will be warmth, libations, and 20 local vendors selling tasteful hand-crafted goods. Find a small selection of vendors we're particularly excited about below, and a complete list on the Nochebuena tumblr.

Sugo Sauce
How do you know Sugo Sauce is the real thing? Well, for starters, creator Maya Sciarretta has been perfecting the recipe since she first got her start in her grandmother's kitchen. From her use of wholesome, natural ingredients to her crisp branding and design, Sciarretta's approach is beautifully simple. You can get your fix in three ways: Classico (classic style), Arrabbiata (angry style), and cheeky Puttanesca, all of which are sure to be a hit with anyone who enjoys a good home-cooked meal.

Strathcona Stockings
Strathcona Stockings makes bright, whimsical, high-quality stockings for the discerning but fun-loving fashionista. With each product specifically designed, collaged, or photographed by Strathcona Stockings and printed by hand at their local studio, it's no exaggeration to say that this is art for your feet!

Kaw Collaborative
Kaw Collaborative makes striking leather jewelery that looks unlike anything else you can find in the city. Their handmade necklaces, inspired by traditional medicine bags, each contain "sacred treasures" that are "said to maintain personal harmony with the physical, spiritual and supernatural".

Ystävä
Ystävä means "friend" in Finnish. It is the name of the creative endeavours of two designers, Caitlin Butcher and Lisa Tanner, whose work explores the simple but innate beauty of colour and line. Butcher and Tanner build large-scale installations in an art practice that is directly related to the design of their small Ystävä keepsakes, which are handcrafted out of dyed genuine leather and add a personal touch to your keyring, backpack, or purse.

Randy Grskovic
Randy Grskovic is a local artist that makes beautiful "analog collages" (that means paper and glue; no photoshop here!) that are sharp, clever, and a little uncanny. "He’s known for his thought-provoking collages which often feature edgy and provocative themes like corruption, greed, and organized religion. His works rely heavily on old images, employing over-the-top figures and subject matter to highlight the sources of malaise that plague society today," writes Rommy Ghaly for Scout Magazine. If you really want to impress this holiday season, give the gift of art. Trust us, we know.

Nochebuena will be happening this Saturday December 22nd and Sunday December 23rd from 12 noon to 7pm, at 870 East Cordova. See you there!
