NEW TECHNOLOGIES ALLOW FOR RELATIONSHIPS TO EXIST THAT OTHERWISE WOULD BE ILL-FATED

Charles Rea, 2012, acrylic on canvas, 30 x 36

VANCOUVER, February 16th, 2013 – Winsor Gallery is pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition of work by established Vancouver painter Charles Rea. Parataxis opens February 28 (6-9pm), and runs from February 28 – April 6. Rea’s new body of work is abundant in humour and highly notable characters and stories.

Over the years, Rea’s artwork has assumed many different forms and subject matter using symbols from popular culture, historical markers, spirituality, scientific equations, and the wealth of information embedded in the pages behind book covers—but underneath all of this is an exploration of myriad systems that have come to represent our visual perception and knowledge bank. In this recent work, the knowledge is one we may not be fully cognizant of but that may be lodged, untapped, in the recesses of our minds.

About Charles Rea
Charles Rea has been an important player in the Vancouver painting scene for more than twenty years.  Introduced in the Vancouver Art Gallery group show “The Young Romantics” in 1985, Rea’s art practice has since followed many diverse paths, making use of varying, often unconventional materials. On a fundamental level, Rea’s works can be interpreted as explorations of space and structure, each series becoming the physical manifestation of the artists’ meditation on a distinct perspective.  By observing how Rea chooses to construct his compositions, his representation of depth and distance, positive and negative space, a feeling of disorientation can be identified.  Rea studied at the Vancouver School of Art and he has exhibited extensively and is included in many private and corporate collections, including the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Canada Council Art Bank.

About Winsor Gallery
Winsor Gallery is dedicated to the promotion of distinctive Canadian and international contemporary art.  The Gallery strives to ensure the long term development of its artists' careers, to support the emerging Vancouver art community, and to stimulate the engagement of its collectors. Working with painting, sculpture, photo-based and multi-media works, the Gallery offers an exciting exhibition program of solo and group exhibitions.

Having recently relocated from the high-end retail zone of South Granville to the burgeoning arts scene in East Vancouver, Winsor Gallery looks forward to fostering new relationships and collaborating with both established and younger galleries as well as artists in the neighbourhood. With the imminent arrival of Emily Carr University of Art + Design’s new campus on Great Northern Way in 2015, the gallery anticipates further strengthening ties with the school, its faculty and students.
