HAPPY PORTRAIT MONDAY

Karoline Hjorth and Riitta Ikonen, Eyes as Big as Plates
Today's Portrait Monday is brought to you by Karoline Hjorth, Riitta Ikonen, and Winsor Gallery's Alex Quicho.

Every bit as whimsical as the landscape it is set in, Hjorth and Ikonen's latest series of portraits focuses on the folklore and history of Ikonen's tiny Finnish hometown, Pohjois-Karjala. Incredibly, the project is a collaboration not just between the two artists, but with the "local senior heroes, sailors, retired agronomes and 90-year old parachuters" that continue to reside in Pohjois-Karjala. The photographs -- softly lit and staged, naturally, in the town's surrounding wilds -- pay imaginative homage to the participants' memories and connections to traditional Finnish folklore.
