Panel Conversation: Inside Story

Join us for the panel that will set the tone for Gallery Hop Day. Themed on the idea of “Inside Story,” the panel will include Canadian Art editor Richard Rhodes in conversation with artists Dana Claxton, Sky Glabush and Yam Lau.

“Inside Story” is another way of saying that there is more than meets the eye. This tabloid terminology signals the promise of more—suggesting the intentions of artists in making their work. This year, it helps us point to the narrative potentials of contemporary art as it spreads across media. The title is a vehicle for us to highlight the interactive ways in which art engages with knowledge and experience. It is a gauge for how artists think through the connective capacity of their art, and how they craft story potentials into objects and works that lead to interrogations of history, social space and the flood of images that defines contemporary reality. “Inside Story” gets us closer to the nature of things. It is the route to the attitudes and motivations that shape what we see. It is what holds us as we look at art and what we take away to tell others.

Dana Claxton

Dana Claxton (b. 1959), who is of Lakota (Sioux) descent, investigates the ongoing impact of colonialism on Aboriginal cultures in North America primarily through film, video and photography. Her practice considers Indigenous beauty, the socio-political and the spiritual. She has exhibited widely, including at the National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Walker Art Center and the Sundance Film Festival. Recent exhibitions include the 17th Biennale of Sydney and “Beat Nation” at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Her work is in major collections including those of the National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Winnipeg Art Gallery.

Sky Glabush

Born in 1970 in Alert Bay, British Columbia, Sky Glabush lives and works in London, Ontario, where he teaches at Western University. He holds a BFA from the University of Saskatchewan and an MFA from the University of Alberta. Recent exhibitions include “The Painting Project” at Galerie de l’UQAM, “The Kingdom of Names” at Thames Art Gallery, “The Visible and the Invisible” at the Art Gallery of Windsor, and “Background” at MKG127. Glabush’s work is in many public collections including those of the Canada Council Art Bank, McIntosh Gallery, Museum London, MacKenzie Art Gallery, Mendel Art Gallery and BMO Financial Group. He is represented by MKG127 in Toronto.

Yam Lau

Born in Hong Kong, Yam Lau is an artist and writer based in Toronto. His creative work explores new expressions and qualities of space, time and the image through the application of computer animation and digital video. In addition, Lau has initiated a number of independent projects, such as the Donkey Institute of Contemporary Art, Beijing, China, which uses a donkey as an ongoing mobile project space. He is represented by Katzman Contemporary in Toronto and Yuanfen New Media Art Space in Beijing, China. Currently, Lau is a professor of painting at York University, Toronto.
