VANCOUVER,
September 2013 –
Winsor Gallery announced today the upcoming exhibition, Indian Candy, featuring new
photography and print media by renowned artist Dana Claxton. The show
runs from September 19th to November 2nd, 2013. An opening reception will
be held on September 19th; the artist will be in attendance.
For Indian
Candy, Claxton sourced material from the greater, worldwide digital archive
in order to create aluminum-mounted chromogenic prints. Bright, slick, and
visually delicious, Indian Candy speaks volumes on how Indigenous iconography
has been consumed by popular culture.
“Dana
Claxton’s newest body of work has been long-awaited and does not disappoint,” says gallery owner Jennifer
Winsor. “With such
bright and seductive surfaces, these works become both a literal reversal of
the white-washing of history and a brilliant tribute to pop art and culture.”
About
Dana Claxton
Claxton is part of a generation of First
Nations artists who employ strategies of contemporary art to address the impact
of history on the present. Since the early 1990s, Claxton, of Lakota (Sioux)
descent, has investigated the historical, and continuing, impact of colonialism
on Aboriginal cultures in North America. Her work has been shown at the
National Gallery of Canada, the Vancouver Art Gallery,
the Museum of Modern Art, Walker Art Centre, Eiteljorg Museum, and the Sundance Film Festival. Her work is held in collections such as the National Gallery of Canada, Art Bank of Canada, Vancouver Art Gallery, and Winnipeg Gallery. Claxton was selected for the 17th Biennale of Sydney 2010 and also awarded the prestigious VIVA Award from the Doris and Jack Shadbolt Foundation. She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History, Visual Art and Theory with the University of British Columbia.
