HAPPY PORTRAIT MONDAY!

Today's Portrait Monday brings you the work of British Painter G.L. Brierley, who is a part of the recent publication "100 Painters of Tomorrow" (click here for more information).  In this work, the "figure" is created through a thick application of paint, giving it a flesh-like quality.  By allowing the paint to react to its environment - through congealing or cracking - and then applying a glaze over top the completed form, the painting references historical still life and/or portrait painting in its almost precious quality and colour palette. The figure is anthropomorphic, but seems to drift between abstraction and figuration.  We love the eeriness this painting evokes, and how it seems to change (or even move?) every time you look at it.
