This Saturday, March 21, join us from 3-5pm at the Surrey Art Gallery to celebrate the launch of In the Wake of the Komagata Maru: Transpacific Migration, Race, and Contemporary Art publication and the Disfiguring Identity website.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Komagata Maru episode Surrey Art Gallery, On Main Gallery, and Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s Fine Arts Department collaborated to present a two-day symposium Disfiguring Identity: Art, Migration and Exile. These institutions turned to visual artists to guide a conversation on the power of art to critically address cultural stereotypes and experiences of migration. DisfiguringIdentity.com features biographies, videos, and documentation from this multi-day exhibition and symposium.

The publication In the Wake of the Komagata Maru: Transpacific Migration, Race and Contemporary Art brings together the art and artists featured in the Surrey Art Gallery’s exhibition Ruptures in Arrival: Art in the Wake of the Komagata Maru that was presented April 12 to June 15, 2014. The exhibition featured the artwork of Roy Arden, Avantika Bawa, Ali Kazimi, Evan Lee, Ken Lum, Mass Arrival (Farrah-Marie Miranda, Graciela Flores, Tings Chak, Vino Shanmuganathan, Nadia Saad), Raghavendra Rao, Haris Sheikh, Jarnail Singh, and Paul Wong.
